Quick Thought:

"Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord..."
Hebrews 12:14 (NKJ)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luke 23:38-43
Now there was also an inscription above Him (above Jesus), "THIS IS THE KING OF
THE JEWS."
And one of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying,
"Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!"
But the other answered, and rebuking him said, "Do you not even fear God, since
you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are
receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong."
And he was saying, "Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!" And He said
to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise." Luke 23:38-43
(NAS)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Luke 6:46-49
"And why do you call Me (Jesus), 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?

"Everyone who comes to Me, and hears My words, and acts upon them, I will show you
whom he is like...

"...he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation upon the
rock; and when a flood rose, the torrent burst against that house and could not
shake it, because it had been well built.

"But the one who has heard, and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built
a house upon the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it
and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great." Luke 6:46-49
(NAS)

1 Timothy 6:6-19

But godliness actually is a means of great gain, when accompanied by contentment.
For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it
either. And if we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.

But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish
and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of
money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered
away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang. But flee from these
things, you man of God; and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance
and gentleness.

Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called,
and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. I charge you
in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who
testified the good confession before Pontius Pilate, that you keep the commandment
without stain or reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which He
will bring about at the proper time-- He who is the blessed and only Sovereign,
the King of kings and Lord of lords; who alone possesses immortality and dwells
in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be honor and eternal
dominion! Amen.

Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix
their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with
all things to enjoy. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be
generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation
for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed. 1 Timothy
6:6- 19 (NAS)

Suggested Bible Reading for Month:

November 1-7:New Testament -- 1 Timothy 6:1 - Titus 2:15. Old Testament -- Jeremiah
23 - Jeremiah 38.

November 8-14: New Testament-- Titus 3:1 - Hebrews 5:14. Old Testament -- Jeremiah
39 - Jeremiah 52.
November 15-21: New Testament -- Hebrews 6:1 - Hebrews 12:29. Old Testament -- Lamentations

November 22-30: New Testament -- Hebrews 13:1 - 1 Peter 3:22. Old Testament -- Ezekiel
17 - Ezekiel 35.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Easy-to-Read Version:
It is true that serving God makes a person very rich, if that person is satisfied
with what he has. When we came into the world, we brought nothing. And when we die,
we can take nothing out. So, if we have food and clothes, we will be satisfied with
that.
People who want to become rich bring temptations to themselves. They are caught
in a trap. They begin to want many foolish things that will hurt them. Those things
ruin and destroy people. The love of money causes all kinds of evil. Some people
have left the true faith (teaching) because they want to get more and more money.
But they have caused themselves to be very, very sad. But you are a man of God.
So you should stay away from all those things. Try to live in the right way, serve
God, have faith, love, patience, and gentleness.
Keeping your faith is like running a race. Try as hard as you can to win that race.
Be sure you get that life that continues forever. You were called to have that life.
And you confessed the great truth [about Christ] in a way that many people heard
you. Before God and Christ Jesus I give you a command. Christ Jesus is the One
that confessed that same great truth when he stood before Pontius Pilate. And God
is the One that gives life to everything. Now I tell you: Do the things you were
commanded to do. Do those things without wrong or blame until the time when our
Lord Jesus Christ comes again. God will make that happen at the right time. God
is the blessed and only Ruler. God is the King of all kings and the Lord of all
lords (rulers). God is the only One who never dies. God lives in light so bright
that men cannot go near it. No person has ever seen God. No person is able to see
God. Honor to God and power forever. Amen.
Give this command to the people who are rich with the things this world has. Tell
them not to be proud. Tell those rich people to hope in God, not their money. Money
cannot be trusted. But God takes care of us richly. He gives us everything to enjoy.
Tell the rich people to do good. Tell them to be rich in doing good things. And
tell them to be happy to give and ready to share. By doing that they will be saving
a treasure for themselves [in heaven]. That treasure will be a strong foundation--their
future life can be built on that treasure. Then they will be able to have the life
that is true life. 1 Timothy 6:6-19 (ERV)
New Testament in a Year - October 31
King James and other versions... [http://bibleabc.net/bible/kjv/1tim5-1.htm]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Some Rules for Living with Other People
5 1Don't speak angrily to an older man. But talk to him like he was your father.
Treat the younger men like brothers. 2Treat the older women like mothers. And treat
the younger women like sisters. Always treat them in a good way.

3Give honor to (take care of) widows* who are really alone. 4But if a widow has
children or grandchildren, the first thing they need to learn is this: to show respect
for their own family [by helping their parents]. When they do this, they will be
repaying their parents or grandparents. That pleases God. 5If a widow is really
alone and without help, then she hopes in God [to take care of her]. That woman
prays all the time, night and day. She asks God for help. 6But the widow who uses
her life to please herself is really dead while she is still living. 7Tell the believers
there to do these things (take care of their family) so that no other person can
say they are doing wrong. 8A person should take care of all his own people. Most
important, he should take care of his own family. If a person does not do that,
then he does not accept the [true] faith (teaching). That person is worse than a
person who does not believe.

9To be added to your list of widows,* a woman must be 60 years old or older. She
must have been faithful to her husband. 10She must be known as a woman who has
done good things. I mean good things like raising her children, accepting visitors
in her home, washing the feet of God's people, helping people in trouble, and using
her life to do all kinds of good things. 11But don't put younger widows* on that
list. When they give themselves to Christ, they are often pulled away from him
by their strong physical needs. Then they want to marry again. 12And they will be
judged for that. They will be judged for not doing what they first promised to do.
13Also, those younger widows begin to waste their time going from house to house.
They also begin to gossip and be busy with other people's lives. They say things
that they should not say. 14So I want the younger widows to marry, have children,
and take care of their homes. If they do this, then our enemy will not have any
reason to criticize them. 15But some of the younger widows have already turned away
to follow Satan (the devil). 16If any woman who is a believer has widows* in her
family, then she* should care for them herself. The church should not be troubled
to care for them. Then the church will be able to care for the widows who have no
living family.

17The elders* who lead the church in a good way should receive great honor. They
should be paid doubly well. This is especially true for those elders who work in
speaking and teaching. 18Why? Because the Scripture* says, "When a work animal is
doing the work of separating grain, don't cover its mouth [and stop it from eating
the grain]."* And the Scripture also says, "A worker should be given his pay."*
19Don't listen to a person who accuses an elder.* You should listen to that person
only if there are two or three other people who can say what the elder did wrong.
20Tell those people who sin that they are wrong. Do this in front of the whole church.
In that way the others will have a warning. 21Before God and Jesus Christ and the
chosen angels I command you to do these things. But don't judge people before you
know the truth. And do these things equally to every person. 22Think carefully before
you put your hands on* any person, [making him an elder]. Don't share in the sins
of other people. Keep yourself pure.

23Timothy, you have been drinking only water. Stop doing that, and drink a little
wine. This will help your stomach, and you will not be sick so often.

24The sins of some people are easy to see. Their sins show that they will be judged.
But the sins of some other people are seen only later. 25It is the same with the
good things people do. The good things people do are easy to see. But even when
those good things are not easy to see, they cannot stay hidden.

Footnotes: widows A widow is a woman whose husband has died. woman ... she Some
Greek copies have: "man or woman ... he/she." elder(s) A group of men chosen to
lead a church. Also called "overseers" and "pastors" (shepherds), they have the
work of caring for God's people (Acts 20:28; Eph. 4:11; Tit. 1:7,9). Scripture Part
of the Holy Writings--God's message to people through the writers of the Bible.

DAILY DEVOTIONAL

October 31

John 10:10 Amplified Bible (AMP)

10 The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).

Today people are celebrating Halloween. It is also called "The day of the dead". Children are dressing up in all kinds of costumes. Some look like ghosts, goblins, and other creatures from fairy tales. So how should a Christian respond?

Satan (the thief) came to steal, kill, and destroy. A lot of what Halloween represents has to do with Satan. However, we can turn this around and put the focus on Jesus. You can have children dress them up in costumes of Bible Characters. You will find that many local Churches are doing some sort of a "Fall" or "Harvest" celebration. Take your kids to that instead of Trick or Treating.

If you are going to be home, you could put something of real value into the bags the kids bring by. Try printing out copies of "The Heart of God". This is a simple salvation message that focuses on how much God loves you. You could give the note out with pieces of candy. Just copy and paste the note into your favorite Word Processor and print it out. Here is a copy of "The Heart of God" –

The Heart of God

I wanted to drop you a little note. I want you to spend some time with Me. In fact I want you to spend eternity with Me. I sent you my Son so that we could spend eternity together. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Spend some time with Me and I will bless you. Come to Me and I will be your comforter, counselor, helper, advocate, intercessor, strengthener, and standby. I will reach down from heaven and help you. Isaiah 41:13 For I, the LORD your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, 'Fear not; I will help you.'

I have given you the freedom to choose. You can do it on your own. Or you can seek Me and I will give you the desires of your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.

Look I already know all of your faults. Every single person has sinned. Your sins did not stop Me from reaching out to touch your life. Do not let your sins stop you from finding Me (God). Romans 5:8-9 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

I want you to find Me. I will come to you right NOW! All you need to do is ask. Ask Me to come into your life and I will. Ask Me to come into your heart and I will. Romans 10:8-10 But what does it say? 'The word is near you, in your mouth, and in your heart' (that is, the word of faith which we preach): That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

I am not going to force Myself on you. I love you. I want you to spend time with Me. But I am going to give you the right to choose. John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.

Now you have power and knowledge. Use that power with wisdom. Come and spend some time with Me. Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.

Is there any reason why you can't make Jesus the Lord of your life right now? Say this prayer out-loud:

I believe that Jesus is the Son of God. I believe He died for me on the Cross of Calvary, bearing my sins for me. I believe that He rose from the dead and is alive right now. Dear Lord Jesus, come into my life, now! Come into my heart now. I believe in my heart. Therefore I say with my mouth that Jesus Christ is my personal Lord and Savior. And I am right now, born again.

NEW TESTAMENT

1 Corinthians 14:1 through 1 Corinthians 14:40 (KJV)
1Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 2For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 3But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 4He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. 5I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

6Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? 7And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped? 8For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle? 9So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air. 10There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification. 11Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me. 12Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. 13Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. 14For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest? 17For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified. 18I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: 19Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. 20Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.

21In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. 22Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. 23If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? 24But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: 25And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.

26How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. 27If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. 28But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. 29Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. 30If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. 31For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. 32And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

34Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. 35And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

36What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? 37If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. 38But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. 39Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. 40Let all things be done decently and in order.

OLD TESTAMENT

Jeremiah 37:1 through Jeremiah 37:21 (KJV)
1And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah. 2But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the LORD, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah. 3And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the LORD our God for us. 4Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison. 5Then Pharaoh's army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem. 6Then came the word of the LORD unto the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 7Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to inquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh's army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land. 8And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire. 9Thus saith the LORD; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart. 10For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

11And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army, 12Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people. 13And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans. 14Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes. 15Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison. 16When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days; 17Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon. 18Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison? 19Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land? 20Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there. 21Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Jeremiah 38:1 through Jeremiah 38:28 (KJV)
1Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying, 2Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live. 3Thus saith the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which shall take it. 4Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt. 5Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you. 6Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire. 7Now when Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin; 8Ebedmelech went forth out of the king's house, and spake to the king, saying, 9My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city. 10Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die. 11So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah. 12And Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so. 13So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

14Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me. 15Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken unto me? 16So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life. 17Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon's princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house: 18But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand. 19And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me. 20But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live. 21But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD hath showed me: 22And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back. 23So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire. 24Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die. 25But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee: 26Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there. 27Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived. 28So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.

NEW TESTAMENT

1 Corinthians 14:1 through 1 Corinthians 14:40 (NIV)
1Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. 2For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. 3But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

6Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? 7Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? 8Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? 9So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me. 12So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.

13For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. 14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. 16If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say "Amen" to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying? 17You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.

18I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. 21In the Law it is written:

"Through men of strange tongues

and through the lips of foreigners

I will speak to this people,

but even then they will not listen to me,"

says the Lord.

22Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. 23So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, 25and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, "God is really among you!"

26What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church. 27If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God.

29Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 30And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. 33For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.

As in all the congregations of the saints, 34women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. 35If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

36Did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only people it has reached? 37If anybody thinks he is a prophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord's command. 38If he ignores this, he himself will be ignored.

39Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

OLD TESTAMENT

Jeremiah 37:1 through Jeremiah 37:21 (NIV)
1Zedekiah son of Josiah was made king of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim. 2Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention to the words the LORD had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.

3King Zedekiah, however, sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah with the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with this message: "Please pray to the LORD our God for us."

4Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison. 5Pharaoh's army had marched out of Egypt, and when the Babylonians who were besieging Jerusalem heard the report about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.

6Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet: 7"This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of me, 'Pharaoh's army, which has marched out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt. 8Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down.'

9"This is what the LORD says: Do not deceive yourselves, thinking, 'The Babylonians will surely leave us.' They will not! 10Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn this city down."

11After the Babylonian army had withdrawn from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army, 12Jeremiah started to leave the city to go to the territory of Benjamin to get his share of the property among the people there. 13But when he reached the Benjamin Gate, the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, arrested him and said, "You are deserting to the Babylonians!"

14"That's not true!" Jeremiah said. "I am not deserting to the Babylonians." But Irijah would not listen to him; instead, he arrested Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. 15They were angry with Jeremiah and had him beaten and imprisoned in the house of Jonathan the secretary, which they had made into a prison.

16Jeremiah was put into a vaulted cell in a dungeon, where he remained a long time. 17Then King Zedekiah sent for him and had him brought to the palace, where he asked him privately, "Is there any word from the LORD?"

"Yes," Jeremiah replied, "you will be handed over to the king of Babylon."

18Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, "What crime have I committed against you or your officials or this people, that you have put me in prison? 19Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, 'The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land'? 20But now, my lord the king, please listen. Let me bring my petition before you: Do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, or I will die there."

21King Zedekiah then gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the courtyard of the guard and given bread from the street of the bakers each day until all the bread in the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

Jeremiah 38:1 through Jeremiah 38:28 (NIV)
1Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jehucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malkijah heard what Jeremiah was telling all the people when he said, 2"This is what the LORD says: 'Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague, but whoever goes over to the Babylonians will live. He will escape with his life; he will live.' 3And this is what the LORD says: 'This city will certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon, who will capture it.'"

4Then the officials said to the king, "This man should be put to death. He is discouraging the soldiers who are left in this city, as well as all the people, by the things he is saying to them. This man is not seeking the good of these people but their ruin."

5"He is in your hands," King Zedekiah answered. "The king can do nothing to oppose you."

6So they took Jeremiah and put him into the cistern of Malkijah, the king's son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah by ropes into the cistern; it had no water in it, only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.

7But Ebed-Melech, a Cushite, an official in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate, 8Ebed-Melech went out of the palace and said to him, 9"My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city."

10Then the king commanded Ebed-Melech the Cushite, "Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies."

11So Ebed-Melech took the men with him and went to a room under the treasury in the palace. He took some old rags and worn-out clothes from there and let them down with ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern. 12Ebed-Melech the Cushite said to Jeremiah, "Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes." Jeremiah did so, 13and they pulled him up with the ropes and lifted him out of the cistern. And Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard.

14Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and had him brought to the third entrance to the temple of the LORD. "I am going to ask you something," the king said to Jeremiah. "Do not hide anything from me."

15Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "If I give you an answer, will you not kill me? Even if I did give you counsel, you would not listen to me."

16But King Zedekiah swore this oath secretly to Jeremiah: "As surely as the LORD lives, who has given us breath, I will neither kill you nor hand you over to those who are seeking your life."

17Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "This is what the LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: 'If you surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared and this city will not be burned down; you and your family will live. 18But if you will not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, this city will be handed over to the Babylonians and they will burn it down; you yourself will not escape from their hands.'"

19King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "I am afraid of the Jews who have gone over to the Babylonians, for the Babylonians may hand me over to them and they will mistreat me."

20"They will not hand you over," Jeremiah replied. "Obey the LORD by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well with you, and your life will be spared. 21But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the LORD has revealed to me: 22All the women left in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon. Those women will say to you:

"'They misled you and overcame you—

those trusted friends of yours.

Your feet are sunk in the mud;

your friends have deserted you.'

23"All your wives and children will be brought out to the Babylonians. You yourself will not escape from their hands but will be captured by the king of Babylon; and this city will be burned down."

24Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "Do not let anyone know about this conversation, or you may die. 25If the officials hear that I talked with you, and they come to you and say, 'Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us or we will kill you,' 26then tell them, 'I was pleading with the king not to send me back to Jonathan's house to die there.'"

27All the officials did come to Jeremiah and question him, and he told them everything the king had ordered him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had heard his conversation with the king.

28aAnd Jeremiah remained in the courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem was captured.

38:28bThis is how Jerusalem was taken:
