4th Sunday in October
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2 Thessalonians
1:1-10
Paul and Silvanus and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father
and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God the Father and the Lord
Jesus Christ. We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only
fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you
toward one another grows ever greater;
Therefore, we ourselves speak proudly of you among the churches of God for your
perseverance and faith in the midst of all your persecutions and afflictions which
you endure. This is a plain indication of God's righteous judgment so that you may
be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which indeed you are suffering.
For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict
you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord
Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing
out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel
of our Lord Jesus.
And these will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of
the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes to be glorified in His
saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed-- for our
testimony to you was believed. 2 Thessalonians 1:1-10 (NAS)
Questions:
Paul, Silvanus and Timothy writing to the Christians in the city of Thessalonica,
spoke proudly of them among the churches for their perseverance and faith in the
midst of what?
Paul tells them that God will repay those who were afflicting them and that when
Jesus was revealed from heaven with His mighty angels...that they would deal out
retribution to those who do not know God and those who do not obey what?
Easy-to-Read Version:
Greetings from Paul, Silas, and Timothy. To the church (group of believers) that
lives in Thessalonica. You people are in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Grace (kindness) and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
We thank God for you always. And we should do that because that is right for us
to do. It is right because your faith is growing more and more. And the love that
every one of you has for each other is also growing.
So we boast about you to the other churches of God. We tell the other churches the
way you continue to be strong and have faith. You are being persecuted and are suffering
many troubles, but you continue with strength and faith. That is proof that God
is right in his judgment. God wants you to be worthy of his kingdom. Your suffering
is for that kingdom.
God will do what is right. He will give trouble to those people who trouble you.
And God will give peace to you people who are troubled. And he will give peace
to us. God will give us this help when the Lord Jesus is shown to us. Jesus will
come from heaven with his powerful angels. He will come from heaven with burning
fire to punish those people who don't know God. He will punish those people who
don't do anything when they hear the message about our Lord Jesus Christ.
Those people will be punished with a destruction that continues forever. They will
not be allowed to be with the Lord. Those people will be kept away from his great
power. This will happen on the day when the Lord [Jesus] comes. Jesus will come
to receive glory with his holy people. And all the people who have believed will
be amazed at Jesus. You will be in that group of believers, because you believed
the things we told you. 2 Thessalonians 1:1-10 (ERV)
