September 9
Deuteronomy 30:19-20 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
19 "I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,
20 by loving the LORD your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them."
How far will you go when it comes to obeying God? I had to make that choice this weekend. I had written a few of the devotionals and Carla had read how I was talking about choosing "Life" vs. choosing "Death". When we are at the grocery store, I put some Ice Cream into the cart. Now, this was not some shabby cheap Ice Cream. This was the best, with chunks of Heath Bar in Carmel Ice Cream with swirls of Carmel and chocolate. MMmmm, now that was Ice Cream. Several hours after we had bought the Ice Cream, Carla asked me, "Did you make a choice for "Life" or for "Death" when you bought the ice cream?"
A friend of ours has had several heart surgeries and he said it was because of eating too much Ice Cream. Well, I have a few pounds that I should lose and most of it is because of Ice Cream. I decided to apply what I have been teaching in the devotionals. Let's see how Ice Cream stands up to scripture.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Amplified Bible (AMP)
19 Do you not know that your body is the temple (the very sanctuary) of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you, Whom you have received [as a Gift] from God? You are not your own,
20 You were bought with a price [purchased with a preciousness and paid for, made His own]. So then, honor God and bring glory to Him in your body.
Does my being overweight bring glory and honor to God? When you love God you will bring God glory and honor. My Ice Cream was not doing that. Ice Cream in moderation wont hurt you. I have gone past the point of moderation and God is dealing with me on it.
Romans 12:1-2 New International Version (NIV)
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.
2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.
I can see that my Ice Cream was not offering my body as a living sacrifice. My Ice Cream was not "Obeying God".
Matthew 4:4 King James Version (KJV)
4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Part of "Cleaving to God" is cleaving to His every word and we have already seen what the word says on this situation. So as I sat down to write this devotional I took Carla into the kitchen and dumped out what was left of the Ice Cream.
God wants us to enjoy life. We have to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit and be mindful of what is good for us. So follow this simple principle – "Love God", "Obey God", "Cleave to God" and you will live a long and full life.
Speak the Word: Father, I love you, obey you, and cleave to you. I will live a long abundant and satisfying life.
