DAILY DEVOTIONAL

July 5

2 Corinthians 5:17-21 New International Version (NIV)

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

You are a new creature. The literal Greek says you are a "new species of being that never existed before". You have been recreated. But what changed? Physically you look the same. So what changed?

Your spirit has been recreated and now you have the Holy Spirit residing inside of you. All of your sins were forgiven and you were given right-standing with God. You have been made the "righteousness of God".

How can we be the "righteousness of God" when we still mess up? Being the "righteousness of God" has nothing to do with our good works. We are the "Righteousness of God" because of Jesus. Jesus was made sin so that we could be made the "Righteousness of God" (verse 21).

Isaiah 64:6 New International Version (NIV)

6
All of us have become like one who is unclean,

and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;

we all shrivel up like a leaf,

and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

Without Jesus we are unrighteous and filthy. We lived for ourselves, to satisfy our lusts. Jesus forgave us of all of our sins. We were put into right-standing with God. In other words we traded our unrighteousness for Jesus' righteousness. You could say we traded coats with Jesus. We gave him our filthy, unrighteous, coat and Jesus gave us His clean, perfect, righteous, coat.

Speak the Word: Father I have been made the righteousness of God. I can stand in your presence without shame.
