4th Sunday in January
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Matthew 14:22-33
And immediately He (Jesus) made the disciples get into the boat, and go ahead of
Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. And after He had sent
the multitudes away, He went up to the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it
was evening, He was there alone.
But the boat was already many stadia away from the land, battered by the waves;
for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them,
walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were
frightened, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately
Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."
And Peter answered Him and said, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You
on the water." And He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on
the water and came toward Jesus. But seeing the wind, he became afraid, and beginning
to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!"
And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him,
"O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when they got into the boat, the
wind stopped. And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "You are certainly
God's Son!" Matthew 14:22-33 (NAS)
Questions:
Why were the disciples afraid when they first saw Jesus near the boat?
Peter had enough faith to start walking out on the sea to be with Jesus...but, because
of his weakness in faith, what happened afterward?
Do you wish you had more faith?
Easy-to-Read Version:
Then Jesus made the followers get into the boat. Jesus told them to go to the other
side of the lake. Jesus said that he would come later. Jesus stayed there to tell
the people they could go home. After Jesus said good-bye to the people, he went
up into the hills. Jesus went there alone to pray. It was late, and Jesus was there
alone.
At this time, the boat was already far away on the lake. The boat was having trouble
because of the waves. The wind was blowing against it. Between three and six o'clock
in the morning, Jesus' followers were still in the boat. Jesus came to them. He
was walking on the water. The followers saw Jesus walking on the water and they
were afraid. They said, "It's a ghost!" The followers shouted with fear. But Jesus
quickly spoke to them. Jesus said, "Don't worry! It's me! Don't be afraid."
Peter said, "Lord, if that is really you, then tell me to come to you on the water."
Jesus said, "Come, Peter." Then Peter left the boat and walked on the water to Jesus.
But while Peter was walking on the water, he saw the wind and the waves. Peter became
afraid and began sinking down into the water. Peter shouted, "Lord, save me!"
Then Jesus caught Peter with his hand. Jesus said, "Your faith is small. Why did
you doubt?" After Peter and Jesus were in the boat, the wind became calm. Then
those followers in the boat worshiped Jesus and said, "Truly you are the Son of
God." Matthew 14:22-33 (ERV)
